What about this in your Castle?
We have just completed this lovely Knole sofa which will soon be looking for a new home. The Knole sofa originates from the 17th Century when it initially served as a formal throne before becoming a comfortable draught proof seat. The sides are hinged and secured using elaborate cord tie backs. It is comfortable and quite a talking point in any setting.
The original Knole sofa is housed at Knole in Kent, a house owned by the Sackville-Wests family since 1605 and now in the care of the British National Trust, but I digress.
Blanchetts Fine Furniture is proud to continue the making of traditional furniture as well as re-furbishment of fine old pieces. We have been known to rework the original horse hair fill of a French bench sofa that was over two hundred years old. One is left wondering of the history of the furniture whilst sifting through two centuries of dust whilst repairing springs and re strengthening the glorious old timber.
Blanchetts are located at 58 Napier Road, Palmerston North. Decades ago the thought that our senses could ever be overloaded would have been discounted as nonsense. However one has wonder where the hours in our days go as we rush from this place to that, and never out of communication with anyone. Think about a regular street scene where you are confronted by a confusion of sounds, blurred movement, expressionless people, exhaust fumes and vehicles. Feeling tired?
I think we can safely conclude that our senses are thrashed daily with little respite. But don’t surrender; there is your home which is your place of solitude where you rest those weary senses (and weary bodies).
What better thought at the end of a busy day knowing that you will be going home to the peace of your family and familiar surroundings? This is where Blanchetts Fine Furniture can offer assistance. Regular Guardian readers will know by now that Blanchetts manufacture wonderful handmade sofas and chairs which we make to your requirements, size an choice of fabric.
Why not consider repairing and reupholstering that furniture that has served you well and that you still enjoy the shape of, just not the diminished level of comfort. Blanchetts offer re upholstery services and are able to collect and deliver locally.
Blanchetts offer curtain making and fitting service and Interior Design advice. We have a fabric sampling area and access to further fabric ranges through the Wellington Design Library and Designmade.

If you have set your heart on new upholstered furniture, then we invite you to our 58 Napier Road factory where we have display pieces and you can see the professional approach that we take to making fine furniture. You will see craftspeople at work creating wonderful pieces. There could be a deep buttoned leather Chesterfield on the bench, maybe a Blanchett’s chair or sofa, or any manner of timeless styled furniture.
What all pieces have in common is a solid frame made from New Zealand Pine or sustainably milled New Zealand Beech. They are held firmly by angle blocks and are screwed, doweled and glued. Why do we go to these lengths: quite simply we are making our furniture to last!
Please visit us at 58 Napier Road, and/or check out our website www.blanchetts.com. Talk to Judy, Vicki, Bruce or John at 06 357 1224. Let us assist you to make those cooler nights as great as our ongoing Summer.
We watch Antiques Road Show and admire fine craftsmanship from a bygone era. We see the longevity, beauty and the quality of pieces now admired by a generation born many years after the original craftspeople. I can’t help wonder how often this will happen in subsequent generations.
As a result of the wasteful actions of our throwaway society will there be those beautiful antiques available for future generations to admire? New Zealand Firms like Blanchetts are certainly ensuring that there is a heritage to carry on that tells our story.
Blanchetts Fine Furniture of 58 Napier Road, Palmerston North are a contrast to the wave of imported furniture. Blanchetts offer an alternative, making hand crafted furniture, using traditional methods. We use New Zealand timbers milled from sustainably managed forests and make every attempt to reduce our waste. Our furniture frames are solidly made, with joints corned blocked, screwed, glued and dowelled. We know that these will survive for future generations to enjoy and we are so proud of this.
If you are presently contemplating buying new furniture, we would ask that you seriously consider New Zealand made. We invite you to come to our factory to inspect what lies beneath the covers of our furniture. You will see solid wooden frames forming the shape of our furniture and traditional coil springs being hand tied into our classic range. You will note top grade components and quality craftsmanship. The initial investment is high but long term value is immense.
